Fighting Stallions

Fighting Stallions & Metal Band Sculpture

A native of Blythewood, SC, Thomas Humphries creates life-size sculptures using recycled material.

The “Fighting Stallions” sculpture weighs 1,500 lbs., is 10.5 ft. tall, 11 ft. long and 5 ft. wide. His inspiration to sculpt began 24 years ago at Charleston College when he decided to minor in Art and took a sculpture class.

His passion for welding and creating art started out as a hobby. He soon discovered that recycled metals were a creative, eco-friendly and inexpensive medium. His ability to visualize scrap metal as a finished piece of art is a rare gift that he continues to improve.

This particular sculpture is a tribute to Anna Hyatt Huntington’s “Fighting Stallions” sculpture that is located at the entrance of Brookgreen Gardens at Murrells Inlet, SC. Thomas has great admiration for her work and simply wanted to challenge himself.

Ernest Lee

Ernest Lee Artwork

Street artist and Columbia legend, Ernest Lee, you may know him as "Chicken Man," painted the “smallstock backdrop” especially for the SC State Fair. Don’t miss him in person at the 2021 SC State Fair!

Special displays, such as vintage bridal fashions or this antique kitchen, are also featured in the Moore Building each year during the fair.

Our thanks to Jennie Zimmerman of Columbia for her decorated cake display.

Divide by 5, 2020
Wood, acrylic, sound

Using color blocks to amplify a message of love, Williams' sound sculpture is quite a departure from his fish, swamp, marsh and landscape paintings. Divide by 5 is a reflection on the current division in America and the hope of unity found in the lyrics of Jesus Loves the Little Children.
