The FARM 1780: Harvesting Blue Ribbons for Generations

The FARM 1780 has been harvesting happiness for generations — long before it became the backdrop for the South Carolina State Fair’s 2025 farm fun commercial.

In 2017, Brett and McKenzie Flashnick moved onto the property to carry forward their family’s legacy and open it to the community. The FARM 1780 land had been in their family for generations, and they wanted to continue to honor it as a community space, the way their ancestors had intended.

The FARM 1780, located on a rolling plot of land in Lexington, S.C., is the area’s go-to spot for all things agriculture. From U-Pick flowers and produce to animal fun for all ages at summer camp and farm-to-table dinners, there’s lots in store for any FARM 1780 visitor — and there’s no need to put all your eggs in one basket when you can spend the whole day trying out farm activities.

The FARM 1780 also offers field trips where guests can combine fun with agricultural education. Seasonal events, like their Harvest Festival, bring families together for a day of pumpkin fun and fall frolicking.

“My grandparents were great hosts; they would always have fish fries and big gatherings and stuff like that,” Brett Flashnick said. “The story that I was always told was that all the other folks in the area — farmers, sharecroppers, things like that — would come and sit on our back porch and listen to baseball games, boxing matches, and things like that on the radio.

“So the idea was, well, this has always been a gathering place where people were welcome. What if we took that concept and made it so on a bigger scale?” he added, describing the purpose of the farm under his and McKenzie’s care.

Beyond today’s activities, the farm’s roots run deep — with a rich history tied to the South Carolina State Fair.

One day, as the Flashnicks were cleaning out one of the barns on the land, they came across a box. Inside were ribbons upon ribbons from the S.C. State Fair that Brett’s great-grandmother, Eva Chicola Monts, had won for her baking.

They discovered she had won the best in show competition for twelve years straight. Monts had even received recognition from well-known baking brands like Fleischmann’s yeast. Monts’ baked goods were beloved at the S.C. State Fair, with her even receiving letters from fans asking for her recipes.

To this day, some members of the family still make Monts’ recipes and treasure their delicious heritage.
