SWINE SCHOLARSHIP RULES AND REGULATIONS

The SC Farm Bureau Federation will award a FIRST PLACE $1,500.00 scholarship and The SC Pork Board and the SC Pork Producers Association will award a SECOND PLACE $1,000 scholarship according to the following format:

1.
Open to South Carolina youth only.
2.
Must be an exhibitor in the SC State Fair Junior Swine Purebred Show or Junior Barrow Show.
3.
Must be a high school student in grades 10, 11 or 12, or presently enrolled in college -- 19 years of age January 1 of current year and under.
4.
Must plan to pursue a four-year degree program on graduation from high school. The Scholarship will be given upon entry to college.
5.

Must have a minimum of three (3) participants.

6.
Must complete the scholarship application and return to the Swine Superintendent by September 12, 2008. Application available HERE.
7.
The First Place ($1,500) Scholarship may be awarded one (1) time only to an individual applicant; however, any Second Place ($1,000) scholarship recipient is eligible to participate in this program in the following year provided he/she meets scholarship requirements.
8.

The scholarship will be awarded to the individual with the combined high score in the following sections:

15%
Judging two (2) classes of hogs with oral reasons on one (1) class
10%
Showmanship (Contestants will be furnished barrows from the Open Barrow Show)
25%
Written essay on a selected topic
25%
Swine production and management quiz
25%

Judges interview

Bonus Points
Number of years showing in SC State Fair Junior Show multiplied times three (maximum of 24 points allowed)

The Scholarship Contest will be held starting at 9:00 AM on Tuesday, October 14, 2008 as follows:

09:00 AM Orientation for Participants
09:10 AM Quiz
09:30 AM Essay
10:00 AM Judging Classes
10:30 AM Oral reasons and interview with judges
11:45 AM Showmanship

The Scholarship Winners will be announced during the Barrow Show.
