Best of Show - Grades 9-12 - $250

Thanks to the sponsorship of First Citizens Bank we are able to offer a larger award for "Best of Show". The art work chosen for this award will automatically become the property of First Citizens Bank to be displayed around the state in their branches. No additional compensation will be paid for purchase of the art work.

PLEASE NOTE: Any art work designated as "Not for Sale" will be excluded from consideration for the "Best of Show" award. Please refer to Rule #13d.

Student Art exhibitors must register their artwork during the Open or Late Entry Registration Period by one of the following methods:

(1) Online Entry System,

(2) mail an Official 2008 SC State Fair Student Art entry form to the Entry Office, or

(3) hand deliver to the Dowling Administration Building during regular office hours 7:30 AM-4:00 PM.

Enter Fairgrounds at North Gate on Rosewood Drive to deliver artwork to front entrance of Cantey Building. All other gates will be closed during this time.

Registered artwork only will be received in the Cantey Building on the following dates:
Sunday, September 21 -- 1:00 PM - 6:00 PM
Monday, September 22 -- 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM
Tuesday, September 23 -- 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM

Student Art winners will be posted at http://www.scstatefair.org (see Judging Results) by Tuesday, September 30, 2008.

Sunday, October 5, 2008 -- 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Enter Fairgrounds at Gate 6 on George Rogers Blvd.
Student Art winners accompanied by their parent(s) and/or teacher are invited and encouraged to attend

the Student Art Awards Reception to receive their award premiums and to preview the 2008 Student Art Exhibit.

School entries will only be released as a group.

All School entries must be claimed by a designated representative from the school.

All artwork must be claimed on these dates!

Unclaimed artwork remaining after 6:00 PM on Wednesday, October 22, 2008 becomes the property of the SC State Fair and will be dontated to charity. NO EXCEPTIONS!!!

1.
The South Carolina State Fair General Rules and Regulations shall apply.
2.
Artwork must be registered during the Open or Late Entry Registration Period using either (1) the Online Entry System, (2) by mailing a 2008 Official SC State Fair Student Art entry form or (3) hand delivered to the Dowling Building Administration Office during regular office hours 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM (Monday - Friday).
3.
CONFIRMATION ~ Online exhibitors receive an e-mail confirmation once the registration is completed. Exhibitors who postal mail their entry registrations must include a self-addressed and stamped envelope in order to receive confirmation that their entry registration has been received.  Please do not telephone the Entry Department for this information.
4.
Student Art exhibitor must be a resident of South Carolina attending public, private or home school in grades Preschool - Twelfth grade.
5.
Student Art exhibitor must be under age nineteen (19) and not graduated from high school.
6.
Student Art exhibitor may register as an Individual (using Individual, Family, Home School Entry Form or Division if entering Online) or a teacher may register his/her Students (using School Entry Form or Division if entering Online).
7.
Limit one (1) entry per Student Art exhibitor. Students registering via their school may not register as an Individual.
8.
Unlimited School entries are permitted; however, one (1) individual student's entry per school will be permitted. Teachers are encouraged to jury their students' artwork. School entries will only be released as a group. All School entries must be claimed by a designated representative from the school.
9.
Only individual artwork will be accepted. Group artwork not accepted.
10.
Artwork must be original and have been completed in the past one (1) year. Teachers: Do not bring multiple quantities of the same artwork. Please jury your students artwork for submission to the SC State Fair Student Art Exhibit.
11.
This is a juried show and not all pieces will be hung.
12.
Absolutely no enhancing may be done to any piece entered.
13.

INSTUCTIONS FOR ENTRY:

a.
Teachers delivering art work for multiple schools should stack artworks by grade and school. Please stamp the back of each piece if a school stamp is available. This is not mandatory, but may be helpful in the event your entries are mistakenly claimed by someone else.
b.
Entry Forms and Labels must contain matching information and must be completed accurately. Failure to do so will result in the disqualification of the piece(s).
c.
Bring a copy of the Entry Form for use as a claim check on release days.
d.
Exhibitors in grades 9-12 are eligible for the Best of Show Award provided their art work is available for purchase by the sponsor, First Citizens Bank. The art work will be displayed in SC First Citizens Bank branches. Please alert the Student Art Superintendent, Ms. Barbara Crenshaw, at time of delivery if the art work is NOT FOR SALE.

GUIDELINES FOR TWO-DIMENSIONAL (2-D) ARTWORK:

a.
NEW IN 2008: All poster board must be securely mounted with a 1"-2" border and have a 2-inch strip of heavy tape applied to the top back of poster board to reinforce the holes punched. Evenly spaced plastic mounting tags may also be used. Matboard, illustration board and canvas board must have plastic mounting tags mounted securely and evenly on the back. Plastic acetate may be used to cover work provided it does not interfere with the hole punching of a piece.
b.
Maximum size: 22" x 28"
c.
Labels must be glued or taped securely to back of artwork and correspond with the direction the piece is hung.
d.
It is recommended that black not be used as a mounting color as the hanging panels are black.
e.
Not acceptable: construction paper, card board, canvas on stretchers, and framed artwork of any kind.
15.

GUIDELINES FOR THREE-DIMENSIONAL (3-D) ARTWORK:

a.
Sculpture must be sturdily mounted with a minimum base of 5" and a maximum base of 24".
b.
Mobile or fiber hangings must be equipped with hanging devices.
16.

LABEL PREPARATION:

a.
Complete correct Label (School or Individual, Family, Home School) to be attached to back of art work (this is the 3rd page of the downloaded entry form - Online exhibitors will find a link to these forms at top of page). It is mandatory that Section and Class (Grade) numbers be stated correctly.
b.
Type or print neatly in ink.
c.
Tape or staple Label to back of artwork -- bottom right side of two-dimensional (2-D) entries or to base of three-dimensional (3-D) entries.
d.
A computer generated entry tag will be attached to the front of the artwork and folded to cover identification until judging is completed.
17.

DISPLAY OF ENTRIES:

a.
NEW IN 2008: All art work is juried, including Kindergarten - Grade 2.
b.
Artworks are selected for exhibition in available space and judged for awards.
c.
Entries not displayed will be stored in a secure location until release dates.
18.

WINNER NOTIFICATION:

a.
Winner names will be posted on the SC State Fair Web site by Tuesday, September 30, 2008. Log on to http://www.scstatefair.org and click on Results of Judging link, also available on the Online Premium Guide Index page.
b.
All award winners, accompanied by their parent(s) and/or teacher, are invited and encouraged to attend the Student Art Awards Reception in the Cantey Building on Sunday, October 5, 2008 from 2-4 PM to claim their awards and preview the 2008 Student Art exhibit.
19.

RELEASE OF EXHIBITS:

  • Student artwork will not be released on Monday, October 20, 2008.
  • Student artwork must be claimed on Tuesday, October 21 or Wednesday, October 22, 2008 from 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM.
  • School entries will not be released to individual students. All school entries must be claimed by a designated school representative.
  • Unclaimed artwork remaining after 6:00 PM Wednesday, October 22, 2008 becomes the property of the SC State Fair and will be donated to charity.
  • NO EXCEPTIONS TO THESE RULES!!!
